Prabash, son of Gopal Khatiwada (Bhatt), a Bhramin in Doti, had a love marriage with Harmata Maiya, the daughter of Jumla’s king, Devchandra, and stayed in Jumla. He later received the Laukhuwa kingdom in Birta, and his sons became kings with the title Shah. This was an astonishing (achamma in Nepali) for spectators, and that’s how the district was named Achham. Achham once possessed 150-year-old Achhami Durbar, which was bombed by the Maoists in 2002, resulting in the death of 122 people, including Chief District Officer Mohan Singh Khatri. Reconstruction began after 2008 but remained incomplete.
