In 2015, the constitution divided Rukum into two parts: Khas-Arya majority west and the eastern part with a Magar majority. The region is named after Rukumkot which is derived from the temple of Rukmini situated on the east side of Rukum. The Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, which covers an area of 1,325 square kilometers, extends over the geographical boundaries of East Rukum, Myagdi, and Baglung, with 60% of its territory located in Rukum.
