 Saptari has the first modern irrigation canal, completed in 1928. In the region, you can find settlements of Musahar and Dom castes, one of the most exploited castes in Nepal. They suffer abuse in the name of witchcraft, lack of education, and lack of proper shelter, and are often exploited by loan sharks. A heartbreaking story still happening in the 21st century.
